Camila Sáez made her first start for Chile at this summer’s Copa América Femenina in the early hours of Saturday morning, but it came as her side fell to a last-minute 2-1 defeat to Argentina at Complejo Independiente del Valle.
The West Ham United women’s team defender played all of the clash in Quito, Ecuador, and Chile had lift-off after only eleven minutes when Vaitiare Pardo hammered home one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Chile were a goal to the good for the majority of the contest, but Argentina bagged an equaliser with 15 minutes to play through Daiana Falfán’s close-range header. And as it looked like the spoils were going to be shared in Group A, the 2006 winners found a 90th-minute winner thanks to Aldana Cometti’s looping header.
There was to be more late drama as Chile substitute Yenny Acuña was shown a straight red card in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time.
Sáez Chile remain on three points following their 3-0 success over Peru and will face hosts Ecuador next on Tuesday 22 July (kick-off 1am BST) at Complejo Independiente del Valle.
