Match Report | West Ham beat Everton to record first WSL win of the season

West Ham United women’s team 3-1 Everton
Barclays Women's Super League, Chigwell Construction Stadium, Sunday 16 November 2025, 12noon GMT

A magnificent performance from West Ham United women’s team against Everton on Sunday earned us our first Barclays Women’s Super League victory of the season, as we ran out 3-1 winners at Chigwell Construction Stadium.

After a dominant first-half performance, Rehanne Skinner’s side went into the break with the upper hand thanks to goals from defenders Anouk Denton and Amber Tysiak, before Shekiera Martinez put the game beyond any doubt nine minutes after the restart, with her fourth goal in three matches, even though Katja Snoeijs netted a consolation with two minutes of the 90 remaining.

In truth, it could have been more than three in east London, with Verena Hanshaw, recalled to the starting XI, hitting the post twice in the second half as we continued to create opportunities, but the Hammers saw out the victory.

The game was full-throttle from the first whistle and the Hammers tested Emily Ramsey inside a minute with a curling Viviane Asseyi shot that Everton’s No12 held. The France international’s fellow two-goal teammate Martinez from midweek fired an effort at goal just three minutes later, but her strike deflected behind for a corner.

While the set-piece that followed didn’t result in a chance, we soon won a free-kick on the right corner of the penalty area that yielded a brilliant opportunity. Unfortunately, from Hanshaw’s wicked delivery, no-one in Claret and Blue could get a flick on the ball and Ramsey was able to gather.

Set-pieces continued to prove fruitful for the Hammers. Ramsey punched a Hanshaw corner, but it caused a melee inside the six-yard box. The ball eventually broke for Shelina Zadorsky, who, after miss-hitting her first attempt, sent a left-footed volley over the bar.

We then won another free-kick after a neat first-time flick from Riko Ueki found Martinez, who was fouled. While the initial delivery was blocked, the Hammers were alive to win the second ball, which dropped for Asseyi to slash a volley into the side netting.

Everton had been relatively quiet in front of goal in the opening exchanges, but when top-scorer Ornella Vignola broke through on goal down the left-hand side on 18 minutes, Hammers fans might have been fearing the worst. But fear not, Tysiak rushed back to produce a perfectly-executed tackle to deny the visiting No18 when she was about to pull the trigger.

Back came the east Londoners with two chances in quick succession as Hanshaw volleyed at Ramsey from range before she crossed to Ueki, who glanced a header marginally wide.

But we weren’t made to rue them for any longer as just after the half-hour mark, we finally got the lead we deserved. Denton was sent through on goal down the right and unleashed a shot at Ramsey’s near post, who could only palm the ball into the corner of the net.

It was obvious Skinner’s side were hungry for a second and just a few minutes before the break, it arrived when Asseyi’s corner was met by Tysiak, who nodded beyond Ramsey.

Half-time can sometimes derail the team that has all the momentum, but that wasn’t the case on Sunday afternoon and we notched our third nine minutes after the restart. A neat move down the left resulted in Martinez receiving the ball in the box and she showed great composure, shimmying her way around the challenge of defenders before firing home.

We could have added a fourth soon after when the Germany U23 international teed up Denton, who rolled an effort just wide. Then, after Toffees substitute Yūka Momiki prodded narrowly past the post, Hanshaw let fly from the edge of the box but saw her strike come back off the upright.

The Austria international came so close again soon after, hitting the woodwork directly from a corner and then neither Tysiak nor Martinez could score on the follow-up.

It was not to be back-to-back clean sheets in all competitions, as Snoeijs netted from close range to reduce the arrears, but it didn’t affect the outcome or the atmosphere at full-time, as we picked up our first league win of the campaign.
