Konchesky: It's good to continue building momentum

Paul Konchesky said that West Ham United are continue to build momentum and confidence, as his side beat Barclays Women’s Championship side Birmingham City 2-0 at Chigwell Construction Stadium on Sunday.

Kate Longhurst notched her first goal of the season early in the first half, hooking the ball beyond Lucy Thomas after Birmingham failed to clear a corner.

Then, in the second half, Viviane Asseyi was taken out in the area, and Dagny Brynjarsdóttir stepped up and converted to seal the win.

The boss was pleased that his side got the three points, which see’s them move top of Group C on five points in total.

We’re really pleased to come away with the three points

Birmingham coming here was always going to be a tough game – it’s always going to be a difficult game when you have a team from the lower division come here in the cup.

They beat Brighton in their last game as well, so we know it was going to important to get a good result today. Thankfully, we’ve come away with those points.

We played some really good stuff at times

The pitch was wet so that meant that we could move the ball around with a bit and we were able to play some decent stuff at times.

Sometimes we didn’t play in the right areas, but we connected some really good phases together and I was pleased with some of our play.

I’m really pleased for Kate

I’m not quite sure whether she was trying to hook it back into the box or actually score herself, but it was good to take advantage and get in front early.

We always try and play on the front foot and we were able to do that today, and it’s good for Kate to get her first goal of the season, it was fantastic.

It’s how we want to play, forcing teams into mistakes, and we were able to do that to get the second goal.

Dagny didn’t strike her penalty as she would have wanted, but it went in and I’m pleased for her.

We’ve nearly had the same eleven today as we did last week, so there’s real confidence there amongst those that are playing

It was massive for us to make sure that we got the three points today.

I’ve said that we want to have a cup run and there’s a real opportunity to get some silverware this year if we can do well, so that has to be our aim.

We want to win games and build confidence, it doesn’t matter what competition we’re playing in – but in this competition, I want to make sure that this team makes it into the knockout stages.

It’s good to continue building the momentum

We’ve had two wins in a row now, two clean sheets as well. We’ve nearly had the same eleven today as we did last week, so there’s real confidence there amongst those that are playing. It’s fantastic for the confidence going into Liverpool.
