Internationals | Tysiak features for Belgium in Spain defeat

Amber Tysiak’s Belgium were beaten 6-2 in their UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 Group B clash with world champions Spain on Monday evening in Switzerland.

In a frantic encounter in Thun, the West Ham United women’s team defender once again started for the Red Flames, but Spain proved too strong for her side at Stockhorn Arena.

Belgium found themselves 2-1 down at half-time after a first period that saw two goals scored in as many minutes.

First, Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas rifled Spain in front, but Justine Vanhaevermaet found an instant response, heading home Tessa Wullaert’s inswinging corner. However, Irene Paredes’ towering header on 39 minutes ensured Spain headed into the break with the advantage.

Elísabet Gunnarsdóttir’s side failed to back down, though, and once again drew level as, after a nervous VAR check, Hannah Eurlings’ near-post finish restored parity.

But Spain showed their class as the second half unfolded and regained the lead through Esther González, whose goal came shortly before Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey prodded the ball home inside a crowded penalty box to extend La Roja’s advantage to two.

Winger Claudia Pina then scored a stunning strike from outside the area with nine minutes of normal time before Putellas notched her second and Spain's sixth.

Following their narrow 1-0 loss against Italy last time out, the defeat to Spain leaves Belgium third in Group B, but only on goal difference ahead of Portugal's clash with Italy at 8pm on Monday evening. That means Belgium have to beat Portugal on Friday 11 July (kick-off 8pm BST) at Stade Tourbillon, Sion, to stand a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.
