Oona Siren and Eva Nyström

Internationals | Siren scores first Finland goal in final game before Euros

Three West Ham United women’s team players saw international action on Thursday evening as the European nations ramp up preparations for the upcoming UEFA Women’s Euros in Switzerland.

Starting alongside West Ham teammate Eva Nyström, Oona Siren scored her first international goal as Finland fell to their first defeat in five games against the Netherlands. Among three players in the Dutch team making their 125th international appearance, captain Vivianne Miedema of Manchester City put the hosts into a commanding two-goal lead at the break. Withstanding the Dutch pressure in front of a sizeable crowd in Leeuwarden, Finland remained competitive in the second half and snatched a late consolation goal as Siren scored her first international goal with the last kick of the game, a composed finish into the bottom corner beyond Arsenal’s Daphne van Domselaar.

Following the narrow 2-1 reverse in their send-off match, Finland now turn their attention to their Euros Group A opener in Stockhorn Arena, Thun, against Iceland (Wednesday 2 July, kick-off 5pm BST), before travelling to Sion to face Norway (Sunday 6 July, 5pm BST) at Stade Tourbillon and then hosts Switzerland (Thursday 10 July, 8pm BST) at Stade de Genève, Lancy.

Defender Amber Tysiak was also in action, earning her 40th cap for Belgium, playing out the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 win over Greece. The Red Flames’ top goalscorer Tessa Wullaert scored her record-extending 95th goal for the national team midway through the first half before turning provider for TSG Hoffenheim’s Jill Janssens just after the break. Belgium cruised to victory thereafter and now turn their attention to Group B at the Euros where they will face Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Their campaign will commence at Stade Tourbillon in Sion when they face Italy (Thursday 3 July, kick-off 5pm BST), before they take on 2023 World Cup champions Spain (Monday 7 July, 5pm BST) at Stockhorn Arena in Thun. They will then conclude the group stage at Stade Tourbillon against Portugal (Friday 11 July, 8pm BST).
