Internationals | Sáez and Chile a win away from Copa América Femenina semi-finals

Camila Sáez and Chile are up to second in the Copa América Femenina Group A standings following a 2-1 success over hosts Ecuador at Complejo Independiente del Valle on Monday night.

The West Ham United women’s team defender once again started and played the full 90 minutes for La Roja Femenina as her side chalked up their second victory of the tournament.

However, Chile had to come from behind after Nayely Bolaños put the home nation in front in the 24th minute. It didn’t take long for Luis Mena’s side to respond, though, as Sonya Keefe caught Ecuador goalkeeper Andrea Morán off her line with a stunning 35-yard volley to restore parity ten minutes later.

And the turnaround was complete in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time when the ball deflected into the path of Nayadet López eight yards from goal, and the No5 duly obliged with a poacher’s finish.

López was soon involved in the second half, seeing a well-struck volley from the edge of the box crash off the post, before Ecuador had an effort cleared off the line.

But Chile held on, meaning a victory in their final group-stage match against Uruguay on Friday 25 July (kick-off 1am BST) will see them progress to the semi-finals of the tournament.
