Asseyi: I think we deserved to come back in this game

Viviane Asseyi was pleased to see West Ham United women’s team battle from behind to clinch a valuable point against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

The Irons had to do it the hard way, as Rachel Williams slotted in after only four minutes gone in the contest, but they improved after half time, showing plenty of the positive characteristics that has seen their form improve since the turn of the year.

After numerous chances were either blocked or went begging, Rehanne Skinner’s side produced a brilliant moment of quality that saw the ball worked from back to front, eventually allowing Emma Snerle to play a perfectly weighted ball in behind for Asseyi to lob expertly over a languishing Mary Earps.

It was exactly what the team’s second half performance deserved, and Asseyi was happy to see the team show resilience and character to keep going in their efforts to grab another point on the board.

I think we deserved to come back in this game.

We came out in the second half much better, with more activity and more power and we showed a lot of good things.

We said that we needed to improve on simple things at half time because the first half performance was not good. We didn’t put things all together and we were missing some details. We were able to improve on that in the second half.

This team has character, and that is what West Ham is all about.

It’s a West Ham feeling, everyone knows that. We know that when we stay together and we work for each other, we are good.

For my goal, I could already see that the goalkeeper was a little bit high, and when I received the ball, I just knew that it was the time to try and chip the ball, and thank god it went in.

We’ve managed to take points at home against two very tough teams.

We all know that Manchester United is a really big team, the same as Arsenal. We know that this league is tough, but we know also that if you believe in what you do, you can achieve a lot of things.

We know that if we all stay together, we will achieve good things and pick up wins. I’m happy for today, but we still have a long way to go, a lot of matches to come and I think better things are coming from this group of players.

I want to say thanks to the fans. You really feel their support at all of the games, and it’s helped us a lot. Also, this point is for them, they deserved it for the support they gave us today.
