Any Old Irons

Any Old Irons host duo at Boleyn Christmas social

Any Old Irons received a couple of early Christmas presents this year in the form of Kate Longhurst and Angelo Ogbonna, who surprised the Over-60s group during their Christmas social event in East Ham.

Supported by the West Ham United Foundation, the Any Old Irons uses a shared passion for the Hammers to bring over-60’s together. For more than seven years, Any Old Irons has provided welcome  assistance to people who for one reason or another may be more likely to feel isolated.

With regular meetings, opportunities and experiences, such as monthly socials, singing practice, technology workshops and through the Club’s Players’ Project, regular engagement with players, past and present, the Any Old Irons have cemented themselves within the heart of the Club and local community.

“I lost my husband during the pandemic and I needed something to grab onto, so joining Any Old Irons has been lifesaving for me,” said Any Old Irons member Doreen. “Although we’re all passionate West Ham fans, it’s great to meet people and hear them talking not only about the football, but also their grandchildren, their holidays, or in today’s case, the World Cup final!”

Following a Christmas lunch, lifelong West Ham United fan and regular visitor to the Any Old Irons socials, Longhurst, caught up with everyone and helped committee members draw prizes from a raffle consisting of a range of presents including everything from beanie hats to a signed copy of Mark Noble’s autobiography ‘Boleyn Boy’.

“Christmas is all about family, friends, people who are close to you,” said Longhurst. “West Ham is like a family away from home. Just having that connection with the fans, brings us a little bit closer. It’s fantastic to have their support, so we’re delighted to be able to give our support back.”

“I’ve known a few of them for a while so it’s been great to catch up. We spoke about our decent run of results. Also our win against Tottenham recently, a lot of people were congratulating me on that!”

Ogbonna with Any Old Irons

Shortly after, Ogbonna joined the party to spread some Christmas cheer and speak to the Any Old Irons as he gears up for a return to Premier League action.

“It’s the best time of the year!” exclaimed Ogbonna. “Our fans have always been by my side throughout my injuries so it’s nice to spend a bit of time with them, especially during Christmas.

“We’ve had a busy schedule this season. There have been periods with games every couple of days, so it’s important for us to connect with the fans who have stuck by us.”

Commenting on the players’ down-to-earth nature, Hazel praised the West Ham duo for taking the time after training to catch up with the group.

“It was lovely having the players join us for the Christmas celebrations,” said Hazel. “It felt so right! We’re all very like-mind so the conversation flowed easily. They were very sociable!”
