Women's Loan Watch: Stapleton makes Reading debut

Our weekly look at how West Ham United women’s team’s loanees are performing for their respective clubs...

Jessie Stapleton made her debut for Reading in a dramatic 2-2 draw with Lewes on Sunday.

The 18-year-old Republic of Ireland international joined the Royals on loan last week and went straight into the side for the trip to the Dripping Pan.

It was the home side who started the better, and went ahead after only 12 minutes when Maria Farrugia skilfully found a way through the defence.

Scott Booth’s side put themselves two goals ahead just before the half-hour mark, when Grace Riglar scored from distance.

The Royals rallied in the final ten minutes of the contest, with Bethan Roberts first finding the net before Charlie Wellings netted a dramatic equaliser in the fourth minute of injury time. Halle Houssein was an unused substitute for Reading in the draw.

The result leaves Liam Gilbert’s team in ninth position in the Barclays Women’s Championship table.

Mel Filis was also in Championship action as she helped Charlton Athletic to the summit of the division, after a narrow 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Substitute Freda Ayisi produced what proved to be the south London derby winning moment on 64 minutes, firing home after an initial effort was kept out by Palace goalkeeper Demi Lambourne.

Filis played the full 90 minutes in the clash at VBS Community Stadium as Karen Hills’ team continue to march on in their quest for promotion.

Macey Nicholls

Macey Nicholls helped Hashtag United advance into the semi-finals of the FA Women’s National League Plate on Sunday.

Nicholls started for the Tags in a 3-1 win over London Bees, where goals from Grace Gillard, former Hammer Wiktoria Fronc and Malika Apinda sent them on their way to victory.

Soraya Walsh made a short cameo for Billericay in their 2-0 defeat to Exeter in the quarter final of the FA Women’s National League Plate.

Walsh was withdrawn after 24 minutes with the scoreline at 0-0, and the Essex based outfit would eventually fall to defeat after Sarah Stacey and Beth Ireland grabbed goals late on.

Finally, Katelin Talbert was involved for Djurgårdens IF in a training match against Brøndby IF Women as they prepare for the 2024 Swedish Damallsvenskan season to begin in March.
