The Hammers have spent the weekend at the campus in Leicestershire – making use of the world class facilities that the University has to offer before concluding with the clash against fellow Barclays Women’s Super League opposition.

This will be the sixth match that Paul Konchesky’s team will have played in pre-season, with the 2022/23 WSL season kicking off in three weeks time.

Team News…

Konchesky will be hoping that some of his squad will have recovered from knocks that they have sustained throughout pre-season. The latest of those was Dagný Brynjarsdóttir, who went off injured after 30 minutes against Charlton Athletic last weekend. It’s expected that the Icelandic international will not be involved.

Emma Snerle and Lucy Parker are confirmed as unavailable for the game against the Reds – but have been able to continue their individual rehabilitation process at the University campus.

Viviane Asseyi and Thea Kyvåg were both given 45 minutes in their first appearances for the Club last weekend against the Addicks. It’s expected that Konchesky will again pick the duo at the University Stadium this weekend.

The Opposition...

There’s a sense of familiarity about West Ham United’s opponents this weekend. The Liverpool squad and backroom team is made up of a number of former Hammers, all of whom will surely be looking to secure victory against their former side.

In the playing squad, Leanne Kiernan departed east London in the summer of 2021, whilst Gilly Flaherty was the first ever Hammer to make 100 appearances for the Club as well as also being the first Club captain in the WSL era.

There are also familiar names on the bench – Matt Beard took charge when the team first entered the WSL, leading the Club to an FA Cup final in 2019. His assistant, Paul McHugh and Strength and Conditioning Coach, Colm Smith were also part of his backroom team when he was in the dugout at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.

After cantering to the Women’s Championship title last season, the Reds will compete in the WSL again for the first time since being relegated at the end of the 2019-20 season.

Emma Koivisto, Flaherty, Eartha Cummings and Shanice van de Sanden have added quality to an already settled squad – Liverpool will provide the Irons with a strong test on Sunday afternoon ahead of the new season.
