Loan Watch: Downes stars as Saints move 14 games unbeaten

Two West Ham United players were involved across the weekend's football in the English leagues, as loaned Hammers continued their action for their respective sides...

Flynn Downes helped Southampton move 14 games unbeaten in the EFL Championship with a stunning 4-0 win over Blackburn Rovers.

Downes picked up an assist, his second of the league season, when he set up Stuart Armstrong who doubled the hosts’ lead on 64 minutes.

Southampton had earlier taken a first-half lead through Samuel Edozie, before second-half goals from Armstrong, Sekou Mara, and Carlos Alcaraz completed a resounding victory.

Downes played 66 minutes in Southampton’s first fixture against Blackburn Rovers since 2005 and was replaced by Shea Charles at St Mary’s Stadium.

Russel Martin’s men have now taken 12 wins for their first 22 games and have not lost in the league since September.

Their recent run of form has seen them rise to fourth in the EFL Championship table, and sit ten points from the top two - Ipswich Town and Leicester City - ahead of a busy run of festive fixtures.

Another Hammer involved over the weekend was midfielder Archie Woods, who saw Dartford fall to a 4-0 defeat by Tonbridge in National League South.

Dartford’s ninth league defeat of the season leaves them 13th in the table, with 22 games played.
