Liverpool v West Ham United women’s team
Barclays Women’s Super League, Prenton Park, Sunday 17 March 2024, 12noon GMT

West Ham United women’s team head to Prenton Park this weekend as Barclays Women’s Super League action returns.

The Irons were without a competitive fixture last weekend as league action paused for the FA Cup, which saw their opponents Liverpool lose out to Leicester City in their quarter-final tie.

However, before that, the Reds had gone unbeaten in their previous three matches, whilst Rehanne Skinner’s team are coming into the game off the back of a solid 1-1 draw against Manchester United last time out.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the contest in Birkenhead…

The Opposition

Matt Beard is no stranger to West Ham fans, and he has enjoyed plenty of success during his managerial career.

During his first stint with Liverpool between 2012 and 2015, Beard led the Reds to back-to-back WSL titles in 2013 and 2014 – and was named the WSL Manager of the Year for those triumphs.

Since returning to Prenton Park, Beard led the Reds to the Championship title, before establishing the team in the WSL once again.

This season, Liverpool are hunting down Manchester United for fourth position in the standings and are currently level on points with the Red Devils.

Indeed, Beard's team are unbeaten in their last three WSL matches, beating Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion, and drawing with Tottenham Hotspur since the beginning of February.

Liverpool and the Hammers played out a 1-1 draw back in October, when Riko Ueki scored a last-minute equaliser to earn a share of the spoils at Chigwell Construction Stadium.

Rehanne Skinner

Pre-Match Thoughts

"[The break without a fixture] has actually worked out really well because it’s enabled us to give the international players a little bit of time back and feel refreshed," Skinner told those that attended her pre-match press conference on Thursday.

"Our Australian and Japanese players have had some really long journeys during the last international window, and they have another break coming up soon, so it worked out well for us.

"We’ve been able to get everyone back in this week really fresh, and training took an obvious upward turn as a result of that as well.

"Liverpool are where they are in the standings because they’re doing a really good job and they’ve been getting results, which has put them in a different position to where we are.

"We have to go into those games with no fear, we have to go and play the way that we want to play, and this is another opportunity to do that. It’s another game, and the last couple that we’ve had, it’s a platform for us to build from as well.

"We played well last time out against Manchester United, which is at the forefront of people’s minds, so I think we’re going to continue doing what we’ve been doing and try and pick up some more points."
