Jarrod Bowen in action against Brentford

Bowen: We need to do our talking on the pitch

Jarrod Bowen recognises that West Ham United swiftly need to recover their form in the Premier League.

The Hammers were unable to build on their midweek Carabao Cup victory over Arsenal at Brentford on Saturday, falling to a 3-2 defeat in west London despite leading 2-1 at the break.

That means the east Londoners have now lost their last three Premier League outings and have taken four points from a possible 21.

Bowen and the rest of his Irons teammates left the Gtech Community Stadium with a deep sense of frustration after letting the game slip through their grasp, and the No20 – who notched his eighth goal of the season in the defeat – says they need to leave their talking for the pitch as they aim for a response.

“It’s really disappointing,” he said. “We let it crumble and they won the game. It was a poor game from us.

“We came in at half-time 2-1 up, but in the second half it was far too easy for them. The goals were poor and we’re disappointed on our part to concede those type of goals.

“We weren’t strong enough to try and keep the ball out the back of the net as a whole collective.

“I think if you score two goals away from home you expect to pick something up from the game, so we have to be stronger.

“I think talk is cheap now. We’ve had a really poor set of results, minus Arsenal. Obviously we have to come and speak about it, but talk is cheap and it has to change on the pitch.”

Scant consolation for the Hammers was the continued fine form of both Mohammed Kudus and Bowen.

Kudus scored a magnificent volley to bring his team level at 1-1, before Bowen set a Premier League record by notching in yet another away game, meaning he has scored in all six of our opening road trips this term.

Bowen has no time to think about records though when his sole focus is on helping his team overcome their sticky patch.

He continued: “Mo has been really good since he’s come in. It was another really spectacular goal from him today.

“Maybe when I look back at [the record] in a few years [it will be something to be proud of], but for now all I want to do is bring my 'A' game every week, and that’s all I’m trying to do for the team.

“I want to score goals, you don’t get caught up in records, you just want to score in each game. That’s all I’m trying to do at the minute, so we’ve got to rest up now. We’ve got a big European game on Thursday, followed by another big game on Sunday [at home to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League].

“Like I said talk is cheap and we have to put it right on the pitch.”
