Oxford starts in Young Lions triumph

  • Young Lions defeat Netherlands 2-1 with an injury time Isaiah Brown goal
  • Reece Oxford earns second cap at this level with 90-minute run-out
  • England top Group B with final opening round game against Croatia to come on Monday
Reece Oxford played the 90 minutes as England U19 continued their perfect start to the UEFA U19 Championship finals in Germany by defeating the Netherlands 2-1 on Friday.

Following a 2-1 victory over France in their tournament opener on Tuesday, the Young Lions came from behind against the Dutch, thanks to goals from Chelsea duo Dominic Solanke and Isaiah Brown.

Brown’s winner was a dramatic injury time effort and ensured England went top of Group B with six points from two games.

Aidy Boothroyd’s team have secured qualification for the semi-finals with a game to spare.

Oxford’s Hammers teammate Sam Howes was among the unused substitutes for England and his chance could come in the third group game against Croatia in Heidenheim on Monday.

Howes was a winner of the UEFA U17 Championship with many of this group of players two years ago, with England looking to lift the U19 title for the first time since the tournament's inception in 2002.
