Classic match

Middlesbrough 1-3 West Ham United
Division Two
26 April 1958

The Hammers finished their Division Two title-winning campaign in style with a 3-1 win at Middlesbrough on this date 57 years ago.

Having hit the front in early February, West Ham ensured their grip on top spot would never be released with a strong run of form which saw them lose only twice in the final 19 games.

Mid-table Middlesbrough could not stand in the way of Ted Fenton's men, who clinched the title from Blackburn by a solitary point with this victory.

John Dick (pictured) and Vic Keeble finished as West Ham's top scorers with 26 and 24 goals respectively, and they were both on the scoresheet on this occasion.

Malcolm Musgrove notched the other goal - one of ten that year for him - as the Hammers clinched a return to the top tier.
