Classic match
West Ham United 3-2 Manchester United
Division One
8 September 1958
The Hammers were still carrying the momentum from winning the Division Two title the previous season when they welcomed Manchester United to the Boleyn Ground on this day in 1958.
West Ham were seventh in the Division Two table after five matches, but climbed to the summit with this thrilling 3-2 win over the Red Devils. However, with hindsight, the headline was not the result but the player who made his debut in West Ham's No6 shirt.
Bobby Moore was just 17 years and four months old when he was handed his debut in place of Bill Lansdowne, who himself had been drafted in for the ill Malcolm Allison.
This was West Ham's fourth win from six starts at the beginning of the season and was achieved thanks to goals from John Smith, John Dick and Malcolm Musgrove. Those goals, and the debut of the young Moore, meant the majority of the 35,672 crowd went home very happy indeed.
The Hammers' form remained good throughout the season, especially at home, where they won 15 of 21 league games, ending up sixth in the table.
