Thomas Hitzlsperger is eager to take the fight to his old club Aston Villa this afternoon at the Boleyn Ground.
The Germany midfielder missed out on the opening-day defeat at Villa Park but, having battled back from a thigh injury, is determined to keep the Hammers in the top flight with a strong performance this afternoon.
He said: "It would be a lot nicer if we were a bit higher up at the table, but we've been down there the all season. The most important thing is that the last day of the season we are out of the bottom three, that's what we are looking at.
"It's been a tough season, for me in particular, because I haven't played much but I'm quite optimistic, We've got some tough games coming up, that's all we are looking at now and we are concentrating on the game against Villa.
"We have picked up some important points recently, last week we had a disappointing game against Bolton and that's why we have to pick ourselves up and play well."
Der Hammer admitted he still had a soft spot for his old club, but would not let that affect his preparation or performance. "I had a great time at Villa, people always treated me very well, very respectfully.
"I've got great memories but now I'm just concerned about West Ham United and I'm happy to be here. We've got a great task ahead of us. It's a difficult game and it's only about three points for West Ham and not anyone else.
"First I want to win the game then if I end up scoring a goal I don't know what I will be doing. Usually I'm quite spontaneous and you can see the smile on my face.
"Although it was good at Villa at the time back then, our fans would be hugely disappointed if they have a player in their own team that doesn't seem to be happy when he scores for the team, so I would be delighted if we win the game.
"If I can contribute in that way but that doesn't take anything away from the fact that I had a good time there."
