Hayden Is Captain Fantastic!

WITH Teddy Sheringham and Nigel Reo-Coker both out injured for last night's match against Birmingham, Hayden Mullins was handed the Captain's armband for the first time. The midfielder was delighted with his side's performance and his, so far, 100% record.

Talking after last night's win Hayden said: "One captaincy, one win which is obviously good for me personally. This was one result we looked at and definitely saw as a crucial win, the gaffer said it was important to get these three away games off to a good start and that is what we have done.

"Some people may have said this was an easy game on paper but there is no such thing in the Premier League, especially away from home. Birmingham are obviously a bit low on confidence at the moment so maybe it was a better time to play them but we don't want to take anything away from our performance.

"We worked tremendously hard throughout the team and when they kept attacking us in the second-half, the boys at the back were fantastic and we deservedly held on to take the three points."

Bobby Zamora scored a fantastic individual effort to bring things level for the Hammers, but Hayden was not at all surprised to see his team-mate net in such spectacular fashion.

"Yes it was a great goal. He has been doing well in training for a few weeks now and the gaffer has acknowledged that and had decided to reward him with a start even before Teddy got injured. He did himself justice and did well with a special goal which he deserved after all the hard work he has put in. We all know what a great finisher he is and it was great for him to show everyone else tonight."
