"It was a difficult week after the performance against Millwall which wasn't good enough," he admits.
"The lads worked hard, had a few meetings, and we got together.
"As a club we all had to stick together and we have done.
"Everyone can go in their shell but we showed that everyone can work hard for each other as a unit.
"We have to demand that off each other week in, week out.
"Obviously it wasn't nice, the first day training after a defeat like that.
"But we raised the tempo during the week and that is what we have to do in games.
"Obviously the supporters were disappointed but hopefully they are a little bit happier this week and we aim to produce in the coming weeks."
Looking at the win over Gillingham, he adds:
"We needed a little bit extra in the second half and Mattie produced a bit of magic for us, which was good.
"They made it was difficult out there, worked hard, and got second balls; I think these last seven games will be similar to that."
As for the league table overall, Andy is reluctant to rule out or rule in the possibility of still getting a promotion place automatically.
"You never know, but it is so tight with three teams on 63 points.
"The main thing is that this week we did our job whereas the week before we didn't.
"We have some massive games to come."
A first return to Reading for Alan Pardew since leaving the club is next up, and Andy adds:
"We have just got to concentrate on Reading now and if we work as hard as we did against Gillingham, with the ability we have got, we won't be far off in each and every game.
"We just have to make sure we do the 'nasty' side of it, if you like.
"You are on the front foot then if you get a few positive results, and I don't see why we can't do that."
Andy is now on international duty with Wales, and concludes:
"I am looking forward to a nice break and hopefully a good result."
