Former Newcastle United captain Glenn Roeder takes his West Ham team to his old stomping ground on Monday night, as the two sides become the last to kick off their 2002-03 Premiership campaign.

The Hammers were not good travellers last season, winning just three games on the road the - joint worst record by a Premiership team - they will need to improve this statistic if they are to build upon their seventh place finish in Roeder's first season in charge.

However Newcastle, who have been big spenders in the summer will be no pushovers and with the likes of Hugo Viana and Titus Bramble - acquired for a combined fee of £13 million - eager to impress on their debuts it could prove to be a fruitless trip for the east Londoners.

Bramble could be the man to help improve the Magpies defence as no team who finished in the top six last season conceded more goals than Bobby Robson's side. Furthermore they could perhaps be a little bit more aggressive as only Bolton and Middlesbrough won fewer tackles than Newcastle's overall tally of 698.

However with the natural width provided by the likes of Nolberto Solano and Laurent Robert - when he returns from injury, blended in with the pace of Kieron Dyer and Craig Bellamy and the goalscoring prowess of Alan Shearer, the team are always going to be a threat going forward and the Hammers defence will have to be extremely wary.

West Ham's rearguard has been boosted by the arrival of Republic of Ireland World Cup star Gary Breen and his composure will help the other more inexperienced members of the side.

Breen made more headed clearances than the rest of the entire Ireland squad put together in the Far East and he was his country's most successful tackler emerging with the ball after 83% of his challenges.

But despite even the presence of Breen may not be enough to prevent Newcastle from chalking up their first Premiership win of the 2002-03 campaign.
