Łukasz Fabiański from Ollie Watkins
Aston Villa 1-4 West Ham United, Premier League, 31 October 2021

West Ham United were a goal up and a man up and looked to be on course for another emphatic Premier League victory at Villa Park, but Dean Smith’s home side had other ideas, mounting a stirring fightback with ten men.

John McGinn’s cross was met by England striker Ollie Watkins and his header was seemingly heading towards the top right-hand corner before Łukasz Fabiański threw out a left hand and diverted the ball onto the crossbar and away to safety.

Łukasz Fabiański from Kieran Tierney
Arsenal 2-0 West Ham United, Premier League, 15 December 2021

The former Poland international showed all his class and agility to turn this powerfully struck and dipping shot from Arsenal’s Scottish left-back onto the face of the crossbar to keep the game goalless.

Łukasz Fabiański was not finished on an otherwise disappointing evening in north London, either, plunging low to keep out Alexandre Lacazette’s second-half penalty.

Alphonse Areola from Nathan Redmond
Southampton 3-1 West Ham United, FA Cup fifth round, 2 March 2022

West Ham United’s FA Cup hopes were hanging by a thread with four minutes of normal time in their fifth-round tie at St Mary’s Stadium to play.

Southampton led 2-1 when substitute Nathan Redmond brought the ball forward and unleashed a well-struck shot that was flying towards the top left-hand corner before Alphonse Areola thrust out his right hand to push the ball around the post.

Alphonse Areola from Youssef En-Nesyri
West Ham United 2-0 Sevilla, UEFA Europa League round of 16 second leg, 17 March 2022

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Spain, West Ham United needed to keep tournament favourites Sevilla at back early in the return tie at London Stadium to keep their UEFA Europa League dreams alive.

When Moroccan striker Youssef En-Nesyri smashed a rising shot towards the Hammers’ goal midway through the first half, it was Alphonse Areola’s reaction save they kept his team in the tie and set the foundation for an unforgettable come-from-behind victory.

Alphonse Areola from Malo Gusto
Olympique Lyonnais 0-3 West Ham United, UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg, 14 April 2022

West Ham United were already three goals up and on course for the UEFA Europa League semi-finals, but Olympique Lyonnais were still pressing hard to mount an unlikely late comeback.

And so Alphonse Areola’s 69th-minute save to keep out Malo Gusto’s well-struck effort, diving acrobatically to his right to tip the ball around the post, was vital to keeping the French club at arm’s length.
