Talking Points | Moyes on Fulham, reacting to disappointment and going again

There is little time to dwell on Thursday night's defeat to Bayer Leverkusen for David Moyes and his West Ham United side, as a swift return to Premier League action awaits with the visit of Fulham on Sunday.

The Hammers saw a valiant defensive effort ultimately go unrewarded in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final in Germany, as Bayer Leverkusen scored twice in the final seven minutes to give them the upper hand in the tie.

While Moyes said the Hammers felt the disappointment of the result acutely, he is aware of the need to bounce back quickly - both for their hopes of securing another campaign of European football by their league position, and for the last-eight fixture as well.

First, the focus is on that London Stadium meeting with the Cottagers, with Moyes expecting a strong response from his charges.

There was huge disappointment with how the match ended because the players had done a great job.

They worked really hard to keep a good team down, but we knew Leverkusen were very strong and have 16, 17 players who they play and who are very much part of the squad and Xabi Alonso has used them all year. They came on late in the game and made that little bit of difference.

I was pleased with what we did, but just disappointed with the latter stages.

I know they're a good side and we will have to play well in the second leg. We have the second half to go and we have to try to do better.

Disappointment is very much part of football unless you’re always playing at the top, but you have the opportunity to put it right in the next game.

So we have to try and put it right in our next game against [Fulham and] Leverkusen. We had a brilliant win away at Wolves last weekend which gave us three valuable away points, and now we're back at home, where we've done well for the majority of the season, so I hope we can get another good result at home.

Every time you win, it builds a little bit of momentum. I thought we did a lot of good things at Leverkusen, partly because we had a really good result at Wolves last Saturday.

We'll always go into a game with hope and things can alter in football very quickly, so hopefully it can change against Leverkusen next week.

We've had three years of Europe which have been brilliant for us and if we can make it four, it would be fantastic

The goal is to try and be a European side again if we can be.

That has always been my thought.  When you’re in it and you’re playing the Thursday-Sundays it can be difficult, but when you’re out of it, you’re desperate to get back in amongst it.

We've had three years of it which have been brilliant for us and if we can make it four, it would be fantastic.

It says a lot that we're at this stage of the season and we're still fighting for a European spot.

We’ve had a lot of football as well and it has been a great effort by the players. We need to push on again now and show we’re ready when it matters.

The last time we played Fulham we were well beaten by a good team, no doubt about that, and we know we’re up against a good side, a good manager, and we’ll have to play really well.

Fulham have got a lot of really good players and we’ll have to be at our best.

Every time I see Fulham, I expect to see a really good footballing side.

They play very well out from the back, they are always a threat to lots of sides because they have so many good aspects to their game.

I think they are a hard team for any side to face, and they’ve proved that this season.

Marco Silva has done a really good job at Fulham.

He has stabilised them a lot, and they don't look in any way like a side who have been threatened by relegation.

They will probably be a bit disappointed their league position is not a little stronger, but they’ve done incredibly well since they’ve come back into the Premier League.
