Tomas Soucek in training

Souček: We trust in ourselves and our system

It has been an exceptional start to the season for Tomáš Souček

Goals in the Premier League against Sheffield United and Newcastle United were joined by a fine finish in the UEFA Europa League Group A home win against FK TSC and the winning effort in the Carabao Cup third round victory away to Lincoln City.

Add in a penalty coolly slotted home on international duty earlier this month, the only goal in a 1-0 win over the Faroe Islands, and Souček has been stepping up for both Club and country.

It is a role the 28-year-old is only too happy to play as he looks to help push West Ham United back up the Premier League table. Now part of a new-look Hammers midfield, alongside summer signings Edson Álvarez and James Ward-Prowse, the No28 is relishing the developing connection with his two newest teammates.

Whether driving forward to support an attack, or stepping back to aid the defence, the midfielder is all too aware his role in the team is an all-encompassing one; a position which demands 100 per cent commitment and drive no matter which way Souček finds himself running.

“I am very happy with how we have started the season,” the midfielder told the Official Matchday Programme. “We’re playing in three competitions already this season and we’ve got ourselves into a good position in the Premier League. Now, we want to stay there.

“I’m really happy that I can help the team with my goals. I’ve scored a few already but I think that’s down to the position we’re playing in midfield now. I can defend and I can go forward and attack. I can do whatever is needed to help the team. If that is with goals, then great! But if it’s in another way then I’m more than happy to do that job.”

Up next for the Hammers in the Premier League is a home clash with Everton, with Sean Dyche’s side visiting east London on Sunday.

Despite consecutive losses against Aston Villa and Olympiacos in the last few days, Souček is confident in the Irons’ abilities and talents as the squad looks to return to winning form.

“Different teams look to do different things in the Premier League. Sides like Brighton & Hove Albion, Aston Villa and Newcastle United all play in different ways and with a different shape. But we trust ourselves and our system.

“We’ve got Everton this weekend and we want to again go for maximum points. If we can beat teams like Everton then we can keep pushing high up the table and hopefully get European football for next season once again.”
