Edson Álvarez arrived at West Ham United’s team hotel in Warren, New Jersey, for the 2025 Premier League Summer Series with a big smile on his face – and who can blame him?
The Hammers’ Mexico international midfielder captained his country to CONCACAF Gold Cup glory at the start of July, scoring the winning goal against the United States in the final in Houston, Texas, and being named Golden Ball winner for the tournament’s standout player.
That success came just three months after Álvarez had led Mexico to victory over Panama in the CONCACAF Nations League final in Los Angeles, California.
In between, the 27-year-old returned to his home city of Tlalnepantla to see family and friends and name the renovated complex where he started playing football as a schoolboy in his honour.
Álvarez has now returned to the Club ahead of Wednesday’s Summer Series fixture with Everton at Solider Field in Chicago – the venue where he won the Gold Cup for the first time with Mexico in 2019 – and is looking forward to getting back on the pitch in Claret and Blue.
On Monday, Álvarez joined teammates Alphonse Areola, Nayef Aguerd, Maxwel Cornet, El Hadji Malick Diouf and Tomáš Souček at the Empire State Building in New York City, where they took the elevator to the 102nd floor observation deck.

On Tuesday, he trained with his teammates at Rutgers University before joining them for the two-hour flight to Chicago, where he will hope to repeat that 2019 Gold Cup win when West Ham take on David Moyes’ Everton in a 5.30pm CDT kick-off on Wednesday.
