JYSK Park Silkeborg

Over Land and Sea to... Silkeborg IF

SILKEBORG IF
UEFA Europa Conference League Group B, JYSK Park, Thursday 15 September 2022, 9pm CEST (8pm BST)

West Ham United return to Denmark for this UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL) Group B tie with Silkeborg IF, only 22 days after visiting the country to complete a play-off round win over Viborg FF.

Having completed a 6-1 aggregate victory in the Club’s first-ever competitive fixture in Denmark, just 25 miles to the north, David Moyes’ squad head back to the Jutlandic peninsula for the second of six group-stage ties.

Silkeborg dropped into the UECL after losing 2-1 on aggregate to Finnish opponents HJK in the UEFA Europa League play-off round.

Silkeborg have been crowned Danish Superliga champions and Danish Cup winners once each in their history, in 1993/94, and 2001 respectively, while our next European opponents also won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1996, defeating Segesta Sisak of Croatia in the final.

This season is the first time Silkeborg have reached the group stage of a major European competition, having finished third in the Superliga Championship round last term.

Silkeborg’s 10,000-capacity JYSK Park stadium opened in July 2017 and has an artificial turf pitch.

How to get there…

Silkeborg itself does not have an airport, so you will need to fly into one of the three situated within driving distance.

Around 45 miles south of Silkeborg, Billund is most famous for LEGOLAND, but also has an international airport with direct Ryanair flights from London Stansted.

About 75 miles Silkeborg is Aalborg, which can be accessed via short stopover in a number of European cities, depending on which airline you use. Norwegian flies from Gatwick via Copenhagen, while KLM flies from Heathrow via Amsterdam.

And to complete a hat-trick, Aarhus airport is situated around 60 miles east of Silkeborg. Direct flights are available from Stansted with Ryanair.

From all three, you can take a taxi, hire a car or try your luck on the Danish long-distance bus network. There is a direct train to Aarhus, but the airport is another 50-minute train journey from the city!

Once in Silkeborg, take City Bus line 11 towards Nørreskov Bakke – Oslovej runs from Silkeborg Banegård to JYSK Park. Get off at the Lindeparken/Ansvej stop and walk 500 meters to JYSK Park.

If you are driving, please use the car park on Søholt Parkvej and walk along the footpath to JYSK Park.

There are a few options in and around the town still available on Airbnb , but by the time you read this, even they may have been snapped up.

Silkeborg Denmark

What to do…

Silkeborg is a town of just under 50,000 inhabitants situated on the Gudenå River in the forest and lake-filled region of Søhøjlandet.

While the surrounding countryside is well worth a visit for a hike in the fresh air, the town itself has a number of sights, including Silkeborg Museum, featuring a mummified corpse of the Tollund Man, who lived in the 4th century BC, and the SS Hjejlen, the world’s oldest operational steamboat, launched in 1861, which carries tourists on pleasure cruises from the town’s harbour.

If you fly into Billund, then as mentioned you can take a trip to the iconic LEGOLAND, the family theme park focusing on the eponymous construction toy.

What’s happened there before…

West Ham United have never visited Silkeborg previously, but we have been to Denmark on a number of occasions.

The first was in May 1927, when we won three friendly matches in Copenhagen. We returned in June 1930 and drew 3-3 with Copenhagen. In May and June 1948, we played five matches in Denmark, losing to Aarhus and Jydsk, but beating Esbjerg, Randers and Aalborg.

We returned for pre-season matches in July 1997, losing 2-1 at Brøndby, and July 2011, winning 1-0 at FC Copenhagen, before visiting Viborg for our UECL play-off round second-leg tie last month, which we won 3-0.
