Match Officials confirmed for Hammers’ trip to Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton & Hove Albion v West Ham United
Premier League, Amex Stadium, Saturday 26 August 2023, 5.30pm

Referee: Anthony Taylor
Assistants: Gary Beswick & Adam Nunn
Fourth official: Sam Allison
VAR: David Coote
Assistant VAR: Adrian Holmes

Anthony Taylor will referee West Ham United’s Premier League match away to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday evening.

The 44-year-old from Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, will take charge of proceedings at the American Express Community Stadium this weekend, having refereed Chelsea’s home draw with Liverpool on the opening day of the season and Aston Villa’s 4-0 win against Everton on Sunday.

A Premier League referee since 2010, Taylor is one of England’s most experienced officials and has previously refereed two FA Cup Finals, an EFL Cup final, the FA Community Shield and, at international level, the 2021 UEFA Nations League final between France and Spain.

Taylor also famously reacted quickly when Denmark's Christian Eriksen collapsed during his country's UEFA Euro 2020 tie with Finland and is credited with helping to save the Manchester United midfielder's life due to his swift actions in calling for medical attention.

He was the man in the middle for two West Ham Premier League matches last season, taking charge of the Irons’ home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2022 and the Hammers’ 4-0 win at AFC Bournemouth in April.

Taylor was also referee for the 2023 UEFA Europa League final between Sevilla and AS Roma, a responsibility he shared with his assistant referees for Saturday’s Premier League outing, Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn

Having worked with Taylor at the final in Budapest, both Beswick and Nunn again partner with him for Saturday’s outing at Brighton. The trio regularly officiate matches together, having formed the core officiating team for the same Premier League contests so far this campaign.

Sam Allison will serve as fourth official at the American Express Community Stadium. Allison is an experienced referee in the EFL and was appointed to the EFL Championship ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Video Assistant Refereeing responsibilities, meanwhile, will be managed by David Coote. A Premier League referee since 2018, Coote took charge of Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Monday evening and was also the official for the 2023 EFL Cup final between Manchester United and Newcastle United.
