Things we loved v Everton

Four things we loved as West Ham United won in the Windy City

1. Positive vibes

The West Ham United squad has been on the road for almost three weeks, but you would not know it being around the players and staff.

There is a real positive vibe around them at present, fuelled by Head Coach Graham Potter’s desire to inject optimism and togetherness into the group - as was evident in the post-match celebrations captured on camera by West Ham TV.

On Wednesday, the joy and commitment with which the Hammers played not only led to a deserved victory, but will only increase belief among the players that Potter’s philosophy is the right one.

With one game still to play in Atlanta against AFC Bournemouth on Sunday, there is an opportunity to further increase confidence ahead of the big kick-off at Sunderland on 16 August.

2. Youngsters impress

Head Coach Graham Potter has spoken repeatedly of his desire to give young players opportunities to stake their claims for places in his squad - and a number did just that in Chicago.

In midfield, Freddie Potts again showed real poise, showing for the ball incessantly, then using it accurately and intelligently, while his crunching tackling put a mark on his opponents.

Up front, Callum Marshall led the line superbly, making intelligent runs, using the ball well and pulling Everton’s experienced centre-backs all over Soldier Field. The Northern Ireland international almost scored within a minute and forced Michael Keane to concede a free-kick that James Ward-Prowse curled narrowly wide.

Off the bench, Luis Guilherme looked lively in a left wing-back role he is filling with willing, pace, direct running and carrying a real threat.

The young Hammers may have to wait for their chances in the Premier League, but look ready to contribute for Potter this coming season.

3. Fülle steam ahead

Niclas Füllkrug was presented with the Premier League Summer Series Player of the Match award after his outstanding second-half performance at Soldier Field.

The Germany international is a powerful presence in attack, while his movement and ability to pull defenders into uncomfortable positions was relentless.

After a difficult debut season in Claret and Blue, Füllkrug is fit, energised and feeling positive in his body and mind.

Premier League defences need to start worrying about our big German.

4. Win-dy City

Chicago came out in force behind West Ham United.

The Windy City was covered in Claret and Blue as the Hammers descended on America’s third-biggest city - and the supporters were rewarded with a performance and a win from their heroes.

With fan parties in the leadup, including the Club’s first Sailgate on the Chicago River and Lake Michigan, and repeated choruses of Bubbles sang loud and proud from the stands at Soldier Field, the Hammers have left their mark on Chicago.

It was 62 years between West Ham’s first visit to Illinois and this one, but all those fans who joined the fun from around the US and beyond will be hoping for a return in the not-too-distant future.
