Tomáš Souček celebrates scoring at Manchester United

Four things we loved as West Ham United triumphed at Manchester United

1. Waiting for an Old Trafford win no more!

Nigh-on 18 long years had passed since West Ham United had last earned a Premier League victory at Manchester United.

It was on 13 May 2007 that Carlos Tevez's goal sealed a 1-0 victory for Alan Curbishley's men at Old Trafford and completed the Great Escape from top-flight relegation.

Tony Blair was Prime Minister in the UK, George W. Bush US President and McFly top of the charts with Baby's Coming Back/Transylvania, and six Hammers managers have tried and failed to land that elusive victory on the red side of Manchester.

But the Irons have to wait no more after Tomaš Souček and Jarrod Bowen struck either side of the break on Sunday to secure a welcome 2-0 success.

Not only did it break that near two-decade long barren spell in M16, but it also snapped an eight-game winless streak for Graham Potter's men.

During that run late goals have cost them victories against Everton, AFC Bournemouth, Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion,  but there was no such frailty in the closing stages on Sunday as the 3,000-strong Claret and Blue Army celebrated three hard-earned points.

2. An opening goal befitting of the celebration

Just days prior to the Irons' trip to Manchester United, Tomáš Souček and his wife Natálie welcomed their third child, Daniel, into the world.

And Souček marked the new arrival of his son in the best way possible, by notching the opening goal at Old Trafford.

It was Souček's ninth goal of the season, his 41st since arriving in east London from Slavia Prague in January 2020, his second against the Red Devils, and first at their Theatre of Dreams home.

His strike was given the celebration it merited too, as the Czech midfielder teamed his trademark helicopter movement with rocking the baby and a suck of his thumb as a nod to Daniel.

The goal itself was worthy of it too, as Graham Potter's men kept possession for more than a minute, completing 29 consecutive passes, before Mohammed Kudus made space in the box to drive the ball across low for Souček to cleverly backheel home.

3. Jarrod on the spot... again

West Ham's best moments in the 2024/25 season have invariably involved either Tomáš Souček or Jarrod Bowen, so it was little surprise that both men were at the forefront of Sunday's victory.

The pair have combined for 20 of the team's 42 Premier League goals this term, with Souček notching his ninth, before Bowen's eleventh - and 12th in all competitions - took the contest away from Manchester United in the second half.

Bowen has now notched double figures in a Premier League campaign three times in Claret and Blue, and his goal at Old Trafford was his 54th league strike for the Irons, now just 14 behind the Club's record Premier League goalscorer, Michail Antonio.

On Sunday, he typically took up the right position to convert, arriving at the far post to gleefully stroke past Altay Bayındır after Aaron Wan-Bissaka had calmly picked him out, providing the assist after he had initially robbed Manuel Ugarte in midfield to begin the move.

Bowen has long been the man for the big moments with the Hammers, so the fact he was on hand to help the side end their eight-game winless run was fitting.

He now has three career goals against the Red Devils, scoring home and away this season to secure a brace of memorable victories.

4. A triumphant moment for departing heroes

It was confirmed on Friday that 2023 UEFA Europa Conference League winners Aaron Cresswell, Vladimír Coufal, Łukasz Fabiański and Danny Ings would all be departing the Club this summer, having made more than 800 first-team appearances in Claret and Blue between them.

So for Cresswell and Coufal, it was fitting that they contributed heavily to the team's success in Manchester at the weekend.

The pair's opportunities have been less frequent this season than they have been accustomed to in Claret and Blue, but given the chance from the start at Old Trafford, they played their part in registering a first clean sheet in nine attempts.

Potter insisted on Friday that the four departing Hammers would have important roles to play in the season's closing stretch and that was proven true at Old Trafford.

Cresswell had an incredible 97.8% success rate for his passing from left centre-back, while Coufal made two tackles and 45 passes from his right wing-back berth.

Maybe more imperceptibly, their nous was called upon as the Hammers saw out the success - something they have struggled to do in their recent run.
