Eva Nyström

Five things you need to know about West Ham's new signing Eva Nyström

1. She is international teammates with Oona Siren

Much like Verena Hanshaw speaking to Shekiera Martinez before her move to east London, Eva Nyström called international teammate Oona Siren prior to joining West Ham.

The Hammers’ new defender has 24 caps for her country and said: “Oona said some really good things about the Club when I spoke with her.

“I know that we have a really good team here and I’m excited to meet all of the players.”

2. She helped Finland qualify for UEFA Women’s Euro 2025

Nyström and Siren were pivotal in Finland securing their spot at this summer’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, as the pair both featured in their play-off tie with Scotland.

While Nyström missed the first leg, which ended goalless, she played all 90 minutes of the second, in which Finland secured a 2-0 victory courtesy of first-half goals from Natalia Kuikka and Nea Lehtola.

Finland will face Norway and Iceland, as well as Seraina Piubel’s Switzerland in the group stage of Euro 2025, which commences on Wednesday 2 July.

3. She had silverware success in Sweden

During her four-season stay with Hammarby IF, Nyström went from strength to strength as she solidified herself as a mainstay in the Swedish outfit’s defensive line.

After joining in 2021, the 25-year-old played the majority of Hammarby’s league matches during her time at the club, and she reaped the rewards of her consistency in the 2022/23 campaign.

Playing 24 of the 26 league fixtures, the central defender helped Hammarby clinch the top-division title on goal difference, losing just three games and conceding only 16 goals in the process.

That same season, Hammarby also lifted the Svenska Cupen for the first time in their history.

4. She brings more Champions League experience to east London

Following on from her successful 2022/23 term, Nyström helped Hammarby secure a place in the 2024/25 UEFA Women’s Champions League last season, and she played in every one of their group stage matches before joining West Ham.

A difficult group awaited the Swedish side as they were drawn against reigning champions Barcelona, Manchester City and SKN St. Pölten.

Nyström and Hammarby did themselves proud, securing six points from their group-stage endeavors, but Barcelona and City proved too strong, collecting 15 points each from their six matches.

5. Her first senior appearance came at 15 years old

Nyström clearly showed her quality from a young age, as she was handed her maiden first-team appearance at just 15 years old.

The Helsinki-born defender’s career began with her local side FC Viikingit, and she worked hard to move up the club’s age groups before eventually making her senior debut in 2014.

Gaining such valuable first-team experience so early in her career earned her a move to Finland's top flight in 2016, as she joined PK-35 Vantaa. She played in the Kansallinen Liiga for three years, helping the club to win the title in her second season.
