Flynn Downes felt West Ham United could have ended their 2022/23 Premier League campaign on a better note than a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City on Sunday afternoon.
The Hammers gave themselves a mountain to climb at King Power Stadium by conceding goals to Harvey Barnes and Wout Faes either side of the break, but clawed their way back into contention thanks to Pablo Fornals’ strike eleven minutes from time.
With Leicester battling, albeit ultimately in vain, for Premier League survival, Downes always knew his side would face a tough task in the East Midlands, but thought their performance could have brought more tangible reward.
But with the UEFA Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina to follow in just ten days’ time, the No12 is sure his side will soon put the final day loss behind them.
“It’s a tough one to take,” Downes admitted. “I felt we played well with some really nice stuff, but obviously conceded two soft goals.
“It’s always tough when you sort of don’t have anything to play for and we’ve got a big game next week, but the boys were brilliant and were unlucky not to get a point.”
Following a summer move from Swansea City, Downes has enjoyed a productive first campaign in the top flight, making 21 Premier League appearances to add to his 14 in cup competitions.
His first taste of life at the top level has him already itching for more, and he is looking forward to continuing his development in 2023/24.
“For me personally the season has had it’s ups and downs, and it has been the same for the team as well,” he continued.
“I’d like to have played a bit more, but that’s the nature of the game. It’s my first year in the Premier League and I feel like I’m getting there and adapting, so bring on next year.”
Attention will now swiftly turn to Prague and the Club’s first European final in nearly half-a-century.
The Hammers stand on the cusp of adding a second continental title to their honours board and Downes cannot wait to take on Fiorentina.
“It would mean everything [to win the Europa Conference League],” he added. “For the fans as well it’s massive. For us boys and the manager it’s our chance to stamp our name in history. It’s a big job but we know what we’ve got to do.
“We’re all looking forward to it. We’re going to train hard, prepare right and see how we get on.”
