On This Day: Hammers hit Barnsley for six to set Club record

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, presented by Heineken...

West Ham United have played 1,054 Premier League matches – but only one has ended in a six-goal victory.

The Hammers scored a record 6-0 victory over Barnsley at the Boleyn Ground on this day in 1998, as Harry Redknapp’s exciting side ran riot against Danny Wilson’s Tykes.

Captain David Unsworth’s cross was expertly headed in by Frank Lampard to open the scoring on five minutes, before Ivory Coast striker Samassi Abou raced between two defenders onto John Hartson’s through ball and slotted past David Watson in the Barnsley goal on 31.

The third arrived on 52 minutes when Abou latched onto another Hartson pass before poking expertly past Watson from eight yards.

Five minutes later, the Irons’ fourth goal saw Lampard and John Moncur combine before the latter exchanged passes with Abou, got away from Nicky Eaden and shot low into the net with his left foot.

Abou’s sensational afternoon continued on 67 minutes when he flicked Eyal Berkovic’s pass into Hartson’s path and the Welshman smashed a shot into the bottom right-hand corner.

And the scoring was completed in the final minute of the 90 when Hartson played in Stan Lazaridis, and the Australian smashed high into the Barnsley net.

Twenty-six years on, it remains West Ham’s record Premier League victory, and you can watch all six goals again here.
