Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history...

West Ham United continued their positive start to the 2011/12 campaign with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Portsmouth on this day 14 years ago.

Sam Allardyce's team recovered from an early Luke Varney goal with strikes of their own from Matt Taylor and Henri Lansbury - on his debut for the Hammers following his loan switch from Arsenal - before David Norris equalised and Liam Lawrence was sent-off for the visitors.

Carlton Cole and a Mark Noble penalty made it 4-2 before ten-man Pompey grabbed a last-minute consolation when Greg Halford despatched his spot-kick after Noble was adjudged to have fouled former Hammer Tal Ben Haim.

It was a vital home win for the Hammers, who went on to seal an immediate return to the top flight via the EFL Championship Play-Offs in May 2012.
