Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history...

The mercurial talent of Paolo Di Canio inspired Glenn Roeder's West Ham United to a rollercoaster 3-2 win at Chelsea on this day in 2002.

The Italian's two goals helped the Hammers secure their first Premier League victory of the season on a dramatic afternoon at Stamford Bridge.

Di Canio produced a stunning flick up and 30-yard left-foot volley past Ed de Goey to put his side ahead at the beginning of the second half, after Jermain Defoe had cancelled out Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's early penalty with his first goal of the season.

Future West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola curled Chelsea level with an exquisite free-kick, but Di Canio would not be denied the headlines, scoring West Ham's winner six minutes from the end with a low left-foot finish that beat de Goey at his near post.
