Lanre Awesu has been named in the England U17s squad for the upcoming 2025 UEFA European U17 Championships in Albania.
Awesu's call-up marks another impressive achievement in a standout season for the 17-year-old, who was the starting goalkeeper for the young Hammers during their Premier League Cup-winning campaign, signed his first professional contract in April and has made strides in his development by training with the West Ham United first team as a first-year scholar.
He is one of 20 players selected by head coach Neil Ryan for the tournament, with England aiming to claim their third title at this level. Champions in 2010 and 2014, the Young Lions are making a record 17th appearance at the U17 Euros, more than any other nation at the tournament.
Ryan’s side will travel to Albania on Friday, with their group-stage campaign beginning on Tuesday 20 May against Belgium, before games against Italy and Czechia. All three of England’s Group B matches will take place at Arena Egnatia in Rrogozhinë, with the top two teams from the group progressing to the semi-finals which will be staged on Thursday 29 May.
Ryan’s side qualified for the finals with six straight victories in the qualifying rounds. Awesu, who has four England U17s caps to his name, played the final qualifying game, keeping a clean sheet in their 5-0 win over Northern Ireland.
The last time England won the Euros at U17 level was in 2014, when Tottenham Hotspur’s Dominic Solanke scored the winner against the Netherlands in the final. West Ham United scholar goalkeeper Sam Howe, currently at Leyton Orient, was part of the title-winning squad.
All games at the finals will be available to be streamed live on UEFA.tv.
