On This Day: Hammers hit five in Newcastle thrashing

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with RoadX Tyres...

West Ham United put on a scintillating show of attacking football to beat Newcastle United 5-0 at Boleyn Ground, on this day in 1979.

John McDowell scored twice, while Frank Lampard Snr., Alan Devonshire and Bryan 'Pop' Robson were also all on target on a fantastic afternoon for the boys in Claret and Blue.

The result teed up John Lyall’s side to further their promotion push from the Second Division, but they went on to win just one of their last seven league matches, finishing fifth in the 1978/79 season.

Nevertheless, they would record a remarkable FA Cup victory just a year later.
