Summer signing Thierry Nevers hit his first goals in Claret and Blue as West Ham United swept away Southend United 5-1 at Roots Hall in an open and entertaining pre-season fixture.
The Hammers made a slow start in Essex, some loose passing allowing Matthew Rush’s tenth-minute shot across goal to find the bottom corner for the Shrimpers.
But rather than allow their heads to bow, the young Hammers rose to the challenge, equalising through Nevers’ smart header after Amadou Diallo had seen a shot from distance parried out.
Jamal Baptiste then nodded the Hammers in front before half-time from an Emmanuel Longelo corner, before another Nevers header - teed up by a fine Harrison Ashby cross - arrived, along with a Mesaque Dju and a late Southend own goal.
