On This Day: Ferdinand’s finish flattens Fulham

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with RoadX Tyres...

A rare strike from West Ham United defender Anton Ferdinand was enough to see his side past Fulham, on this day in 2008.

The Irons had made a poor start against the relegation-threatened visitors at Boleyn Ground, falling behind after just eight minutes when Simon Davies’ free-kick crept inside Rob Green’s post.

Yet Alan Curbishley’s men rallied to equalise just before the half-an-hour mark, with Freddie Ljungberg’s scampering run down the right met with a powerful cross which Dean Ashton glanced past Anton Niemi for the Hammer’s sixth goal of the season.

The home team continued to carve out chances but were forced to wait until midway through the second half for Ferdinand’s intervention – his second goal in as many weeks, having also netted against Manchester United before the advent of 2008.

When it did arrive, it was an accomplished finish from the centre-back, with Mark Noble providing the cross for Ferdinand’s crisp shot.

There was even time in the 2-1 win to give right-sided player Julien Faubert – later of Real Madrid – his first-team debut in the closing stages, six months after the Frenchman had signed and subsequently suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon.
