Tomáš Souček: I'm ready for those moments

Tomáš Souček showed a natural goalscorer's instinct to fire West Ham United to victory at Everton on New Year's Day.

The Czech Republic midfielder was in the right place at the right time to knock home from close range after Aaron Cresswell's low drive deflected off home defender Yerry Mina and into his path.

It gave Souček his fifth goal of the season, and eighth in just 30 games since arriving in east London a little under a year ago.

Souček has been delighted with his goalscoring return, but wants to keep adding more to help the Hammers continue to climb upwards in 2021.

"I’m ready - when someone shoots I want to be close to the ball and sometimes I can score," he explained.

"I don’t know if it’s instinct, but when the ball is going into the box I want to be there and I want to be prepared for those moments.

"This celebration was for Vlad [Coufal], for my Czech teammate. Five days ago he had a new daughter and this celebration was for her. I wish her all the best for many years and this celebration was for Natalie and for everyone because 2020 was hard for everybody."

The victory gave the Hammers the perfect start to 2021 and Souček felt it was just reward for a gritty display.

Now, with an FA Cup tie at Stockport County on the horizon, the No28 is determined to keep building the team's momentum.

"It was fantastic," he added. "The team showed our spirit and our confidence from the first minute to the 95th. We showed that we wanted to win and I’m happy that I could help the team.

"We are proud [of the win] and it’s nice to start 2021 like this so we can look to carry on for all the year. We still should go up in the table, so we will prepare for the next game and be ready for them all."
