On This Day: West Ham's Great Escape bid gathers pace at Wigan

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with RoadX Tyres...

West Ham United’s Great Escape bid continued with a thrilling 3-0 win at Wigan Athletic on this day in 2007.

As the sun beamed down on the JJB Stadium, thousands upon thousands of Hammers fans roared their team on.

And the Claret and Blue Army was rewarded with a superb performance from Alan Curbishley’s side, who proved far too strong for Paul Jewell’s Latics.

Luis Boa Morte opened the scoring by latching onto Lucas Neill’s long ball, holding off Emmerson Boyce and lobbing past John Filan.

Bobby Zamora and Carlos Tevez both went close to making it two before half-time, before West Ham finally doubled their lead 12 minutes after the break. Tevez, Zamora and left-back George McCartney were all involved in a sweeping pitch-length move finished by Yossi Benayoun’s accurate finish.

And, after Tevez had hit the woodwork and Nigel Reo-Coker had seen a shot blocked on the line, the pair combined before Boa Morte squared for substitute Marlon Harewood to roll into the net and complete a memorable afternoon in the North West.

Victory made it five wins in seven games for the Irons, who would go on to beat Bolton Wanderers and Manchester United to stay up.
