On This Day: Lomas and Pearce secure top-seven finish for West Ham

West Ham United scored at the end of either half to defeat Bolton Wanderers and climb above London rivals Tottenham into seventh place at the end of their 2001/02 Premier League campaign.

Steve Lomas fired home on the stroke of half-time and Ian Pearce netted from a late corner to snatch all three points after French international Youri Djorkaeff had levelled for Bolton.

West Ham finished as London's third most successful side - below champions Arsenal and Chelsea - after Tottenham lost 2-1 at relegated Leicester City.

The Irons amassed 53 points under manager Harry Redknapp, finishing with a symmetrical record of 15 wins, eight draws and 15 defeats.

Meanwhile, Premier League new-boys Bolton ended their 2001/02 campaign in 16th under future West Ham manager Sam Allardyce, two places above the relegation zone.
