On This Day: Carroll and Diame fire Irons to Sunderland success

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with Basset & Gold...

West Ham United all but secured Premier League safety with an impressive 2-1 win at Sunderland on this day in 2014.

Boyhood Newcastle United fan Andy Carroll was the Hammers' hero at the Stadium of Light, heading Sam Allardyce's side in front inside nine minutes before providing an assist for Mohamed Diame to double the Irons' advantage five minutes after half-time.

Adam Johnson pulled a goal back for the hosts, but it was not enough to prevent the visitors from taking all three points back down to east London.

Victory took eleventh-place West Ham onto 37 points, while Sunderland were left marooned inside the relegation zone.
