On This Day: Hartson, Abou and Pearce pluck high-flying Peacocks

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with Basset & Gold...

West Ham United's impressive 1997/98 season continued with a fine 3-0 Premier League victory over high-flying Leeds United on this day 22 years ago.

Leeds arrived at the Boleyn Ground in fifth place, having won their previous three league matches and thrashed Derby County 5-0 last time out, but they were no match for Harry Redknapp's Hammers.

The home side, who themselves began the day eighth in the table, produced an inspired display to pluck George Graham's Peacocks in front of a jubilant 24,107-strong crowd.

John Hartson put the hosts in front inside eight minutes before Samassi Abou doubled West Ham's advantage midway through the first half. Ian Pearce completed the scoring on 68 minutes to secure a comprehensive victory and fire the Irons up to seventh in the table.

West Ham would end the campaign in eighth place, just three points behind Leeds in fifth.
