On This Day: Manchester City downed by Dean Ashton double

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with Basset & Gold...

Dean Ashton continued his outstanding, unbeaten start to life as a West Ham United player by scoring both goals in a 2-1 FA Cup sixth-round win at Manchester City on this day in 2006.

The Club-record January signing from Norwich City had scored in Premier League wins over Sunderland and Birmingham City and a draw with Everton and had not tasted defeat in six matches when West Ham arrived at the Etihad Stadium on Monday 20 March.

Ashton was at his supreme best in front of a live television audience, slamming home the opener after losing his man with a neat piece of skill, before doubling the Irons' lead by converting Yossi Benayoun's low cross from close-range.

Alan Pardew's men were made to sweat when Kiki Musampa pulled a goal back for City, but they would now be denied a place in the semi-finals for the first time since 1991.

Basset & Gold are West Ham United's official sleeve sponsor and eSports partner.
