Yago gets set for Summer Cup Series showdown

Yago in the Summer Cup Series

West Ham United eSports star ‘Yago’ Gabriel Fawaz will be looking to claim South America’s top FIFA 20 prize when he kicks off his Summer Cup series later on Friday.

The 20-year-old Argentinean qualified for the showpiece online event after finishing the season ninth in the Global Series rankings on PlayStation4 – and third out of the players on his continent – for his efforts across the 2019/20 season.

The campaign's early curtailment in the wake of the global pandemic was announced by EA last month, with global events like the FIFA eNations Cup 2020, Global Series Playoffs and FIFA eWorld Cup 20 replaced by a series of regional online tournaments open to the best eight players on each continent.

The only Argentinean player in the competition amidst seven other Brazilians, Yago’s first fixture sees him take on AS Roma’s SpiderKong – who finished the season ninth on Xbox One – before a possible match-up with Benfica’s Zezinho or R10 Team’s Gabrielpn in the semi-finals.

The tournament is structured such that any participant who loses out over any participant is only eliminated if they lose two of their two-legged ties - except, of course, in the competition final.

You can watch Yago take on SpiderKong at 6pm BST – and all his potential subsequent matches – via the official FIFA Twitch channel.

The South American edition of the Summer Cup Series will be played over the next two days, with a total prize pool of $30,000 open to participants.

The 20-year-old is used to rising to the big occasion on the FIFA stage, after recently partnering up with compatriot Sergio Aguero to reach the eNations Cup Final with Argentina.

Yago also accumulated 2,360 Global Series points over the 2019/20 season through in-person events and online competitions, finishing PS4 runner-up at the first FUT Champions Cup of the campaign, as well as reaching the last 16 at two further tournaments, and qualifying for the cancelled Stage IV competition.
