On This Day: Five-star Hammers sink Plymouth

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with Basset & Gold..

On this day in 2005, West Ham United's biggest win of the season paved the way for a Championship promotion push which culminated in play-off glory at Millennium Stadium.

The visitors to Boleyn Ground on 19 February 2005 were mid-table Plymouth Argyle, but sitting outside the top six, Alan Pardew's side were ultimately on the verge of a late run of form which would propel themselves towards a date with destiny.

Kickstarting this run was their 5-0 demolition of Plymouth, with West Ham taking the lead after just ten minutes when Marlon Harewood converted from the spot after Bjarni Gudjonsson handled inside the area.

A bizarre Luck McCormick own goal doubled the advantage before Malky Mackay was given space to lob in a third, before a late brace by Teddy Sheringham put the gloss on the result.

You can relive all the goals from a classic West Ham United performance above.
