On This Day: Shaun Newton's first West Ham goal sees off Manchester City

Shaun Newton's first goal for West Ham United saw off Manchester City at the Boleyn Ground on this day in 2006.

The newly-promoted Hammers sent City spiraling to a sixth straight Premier League defeat, with midfielder Newton meeting Bobby Zamora's 15th-minute cross and firing the ball past former West Ham goalkeeper David James.

West Ham, who were scheduled to play Middlesbrough in the FA Cup semi-final the following weekend, also went close through Yossi Benayoun, who curled narrowly wide.

At the other end, Stuart Pearce's City had two goals disallowed for offside, while goalkeeper Jimmy Walker made fine saves to deny former Hammer Trevor Sinclair and Micah Richards.

West Ham went on to finish ninth, with 55 points, and reach the FA Cup final, where they were beaten on penalties by Liverpool.
