On This Day: Matty Etherington inspires vital win over Coventry

West Ham United's late charge towards promotion continued to gather pace with a 3-0 Championship win over Coventry City on this day in 2005.

After winning away at Wigan Athletic and Burnley to close the gap on the Play-Off places, the Hammers were being frustrated by the Sky Blues as they headed into the final 20 minutes still goalless at the Boleyn Ground.

However, the floodgates finally opened when Richard Shaw headed Matty Etherington's cross into his own net on 75 minutes. Etherington was also involved as Teddy Sheringham and Bobby Zamora added further goals to complete another welcome victory.

While Sheringham had just turned 39, one of his teammates was an amazing 22 years his junior... Wearing the No24 shirt in midfield was a 17-year-old Mark Noble!

The Hammers went on to finish sixth and win promotion via the Play-Offs, while Coventry narrowly escaped relegation in 19th.
