On This Day: Hammers win seven-goal Portsmouth thriller

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with Basset & Gold....

In search of a first home win of the league season, West Ham played out a memorable seven-goal thriller against Portsmouth on this day eight years ago.

Sam Allardyce’s boys in Claret and Blue had made a bright start to the 2011/12 Championship season, winning ten points and scoring eleven times in their opening five matches.

That commitment to attacking football saw both sides exchange goals in the first nine minutes at a fervent Boleyn Ground, and the drama simply flowed further from there.

Matty Taylor, Henri Lansbury, Mark Noble and Carlton Cole grabbed the goals for the Hammers in a 4-3 victory which also saw both sides finish with ten men.

The result boosted the Hammers up to fourth place in their ultimately successful bid for promotion to the Premier League, and you can relive the titanic tussle in our video above.
