Coventry starts for Ireland U21s in Mexico stalemate

Conor Coventry in action for Ireland U21s

Conor Coventry helped Republic of Ireland U21s maintain their unbeaten start to the 2019 Maurice Ravello Toulon Tournament in France with a goalless draw with Mexico on Thursday.

The West Ham United midfielder (pictured above, back row, second from left) started for the Boys in Green, who followed up their 4-1 victory over China with another promising performance in Fos-sur-Mer.

The point gained from the stalemate means Ireland are top of Group C after two matches, ahead of Mexico on goal difference after China thrashed bottom side Bahrain 4-1 in Thursday’s other fixture.

Coventry and his compatriots will secure a place in the semi-finals if they beat Bahrain in Vitrolles on 9 June and match Mexico’s result against China.

A draw in both matches would also see Ireland reach the last four, but an Ireland draw combined with a win for either the Mexicans or Chinese would see them drop to second in the group and miss out.

The four group winners will contest the semi-finals on Wednesday 12 June, with the final taking place in Salon-de-Provence on Saturday 15 June. Playoff matches will also be held for the minor placings.

The tournament is being broadcast live in the UK by Free Sports on Freeview channel 64, Sky Sports channel 422, Virgin Media channel 553, Freesat channel 252, BT TV channel 64, TalkTalk TV channel 64.
