A long-time West Ham United supporter is launching a Hammers Food Bank for fans to donate to ahead of the match against Leicester on Saturday 28 December.

The scheme, backed by Newham Council, the London Legacy Development Corporation and local MPs, will see donations go towards the Newham Food Bank in Beckton.

"It is something that is dear to my heart and I have thought for a long time that I could get this off the ground," founder John Ratomski told the Newham Recorder.

“We are looking for non-perishable goods. Tinned foods, pasta, rice, things like that, and hopefully we will get a good response."

The idea stems from the similar initiative of several supporters’ groups around the country, including the “Fans Supporting Foodbanks” campaign in Liverpool.

London Stadium is now set to be the latest footballing venue now to demonstrate that “hunger doesn’t wear club colours.”

The Food Bank donation point will be open on the day of the game near to the Information Centre by Endeavour Square, close to Stratford station.

Should this initial trial prove a success, Ratomski hopes to make it a regular feature on home match days, wanting to repeat it when the Hammers host Everton on Saturday 18 January.
